Project overview

Grammagical is an educational mobile app designed to help children improve grammar, phonics, spelling, punctuation, and English comprehension through interactive gameplay.

Built for children aged approximately 4–9 years old (KS1/KS2), the app reimagines traditional literacy learning by combining educational content with game-inspired mechanics, audio guidance, rewarding interactions, and adaptive progression.

The goal of the project was to create a learning experience that feels engaging and accessible rather than academic or repetitive — helping children build confidence in English while enjoying the process.

The app was designed with a strong emphasis on:

  • accessibility for early readers

  • child-friendly UX

  • educational effectiveness

  • engagement and retention

  • scalable game-based learning systems

Purpose of the App

The primary purpose of Grammagical is to make literacy learning more engaging for young children by turning grammar and phonics exercises into interactive experiences.

The app aims to:

  • support children learning English and SPaG fundamentals

  • improve confidence through repetition and positive reinforcement

  • reduce the “homework” feeling often associated with educational apps

  • support both independent and parent-assisted learning

  • provide a modern alternative to static worksheets and traditional revision methods

A key focus of the project was ensuring the experience remained approachable for:

  • reluctant learners

  • younger children

  • pre-readers

  • children with varying reading confidence levels

How it works:

How it works:

The app guides children through a structured but engaging learning journey:

  1. Choose or Begin a Learning Activity
Children enter short interactive lessons or game sessions focused on a specific literacy skill.

  2. Listen & Interact
Questions are presented visually and through audio support, allowing children to tap answers and engage actively with the lesson.

  3. Receive Immediate Feedback
Correct answers are reinforced through positive visual and audio feedback to encourage confidence and momentum.

  4. Progress Through Activities
As children continue, activities become gradually more challenging while reinforcing previously learned concepts.

  5. Build Confidence Through Repetition & Play
The combination of gameplay, repetition, and accessibility features helps children improve literacy skills in a low-pressure environment.

Technical Highlights

Key areas of focus during development included:

  • Mobile-first educational UX

  • Responsive React Native architecture

  • Scalable onboarding and progression systems

  • Accessibility-focused interaction design

  • Gamification systems

  • Audio-assisted learning flows

  • Cross-platform mobile development

  • Subscription integration and app ecosystem planning
